The end of an Icon.
March 9, 2017
The people of Gozo went from disbelief to mourning yesterday (8th March) when it was confirmed that the popular landmark, the 'Azure Window' had collapsed.
The rock arch, carved by the elements, was something of an icon, featuring on numerous advertisments and posters to promote Gozo, and was a popular postcard and photography theme for tourists.
Known to be fragile, the arch was bought down around 9am yesterday when strong NW winds battered the island. It was expected that when the arch collapsed it would leave a stack, but this has not happened, and both the arch and sides have fallen.
Although a spectacular site and sight, don't worry - there are plenty of other wonderful things to visit in Gozo!
